DEFIBRILLATORS FOR HEALTHCARE

Defibrillators in Healthcare Settings

Did you know that there are around 30,000 cases in the UK each year of people suffering an out-of-hospital cardiac emergency? To give them a greater chance of survival, an AED defibrillator must be used within the first five minutes. And the best thing? You don’t need to be a medical professional to use one.

This life-saving equipment can increase the chances of survival from 6% to 74% if used quickly. If there is no defibrillator nearby and the victim is not treated quickly enough, there is a 90-95% chance they will die.

At Concept Hygiene, we’re committed to ensuring as many locations as possible in the UK have accessible defibrillators – especially in healthcare settings. To do this, you can purchase a Zoll defibrillator from us or sign up for our defibrillator service package, which includes ongoing support with comprehensive checks, installation, aftercare, product support, replacement electrode pads, and more.

How do defibrillators work?

Defibrillators are pieces of emergency equipment that are used during a sudden cardiac arrest situation. It sends an electric pulse to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat in the event of a heart attack. Defibrillators can correct uneven heartbeats or a heart that’s beating too slow or too fast.

Every second is precious when it comes to saving a person’s life during a cardiac arrest. That’s why we’re committed to ensuring defibrillators are widely available in healthcare environments across the UK.

What are the benefits of defibrillators for healthcare settings?

There are many benefits to having defibrillators in healthcare settings, with the obvious one being that they improve the survival rate for people suffering from a cardiac arrest. If somebody is left without treatment, there is a 90-95% chance that they’ll die.

Survival rates increase from 6% to 74% if a defibrillator is used within the first five minutes of a cardiac arrest.

The average response time for an ambulance in the UK for life-threatening situations is just under 10 minutes, which shows the importance of having a defibrillator to hand in an emergency.

Other key benefits of having defibrillators in an emergency are:

  • They can be used by anybody, trained or not
  • They’re easy to use, compact, portable, and extremely effective
  • They provide clear voice commands to ensure the most effective action is taken in an emergency
  • They do not shock a patient unless a non-viable heart rhythm is detected

Defibrillator FAQs

Is it a legal requirement to have a defibrillator in a healthcare setting?

Legally, no, you're not required to install a defibrillator in a healthcare setting. However, for most clinical environments, such as GP surgeries and dental practices, it is effectively mandatory because regulators like the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and professional bodies will consider it negligence or a breach of safety standards if you don't have one. Also, given that you're in the healthcare industry, your main task is to ensure the wellness of patients, and having defibrillators on-site is another way of achieving that.

What is a PAD?

A PAD – Public Access Defibrillator – is the same as automated external defibrillators (AEDs), but they're designed for public use and are typically found in remote areas that are hard to reach for the emergency services, like nature trails.

Are defibrillators easy to use?

Yes, they're designed in this way, in fact. Zoll defibrillators feature audio and visual prompts to alert the user to what to do and when to do it, so they can provide the proper care for somebody having a cardiac emergency. After all, it's better to have a defibrillator and not need it than need it and not have one.

How much is a defibrillator?

We have two prices for defibrillators at Concept Hygiene. The first starts from £439 per year, and you'll receive our first-class defibrillator managed service package, where we'll install and maintain your equipment throughout your agreement. The second price starts from £1,085 and is based on an outright purchase of a defibrillator. Call 0800 996 1033 for more information.
